Law firm Bovarnick and Associates feature Hive Media by interviewing Hive Media Founder, William Weaver.

Client Featured:  Hive Media

Will Weaver started on the road of entrepreneurship with a video game guide company. From this successful venture he expanded to a gaming computer company in order to sell equipment back to his original customers. Will moved on to found Hive Media, a media development company, as well as the DreamHappy Foundation, a children’s charity.

What is Hive Media’s mission?

William Weaver: “We are a multimedia company that develops web sites, iphone applications, online games and print graphics.  Our goal is to use a top talented global team of artists and programmers to provide our clients with exceptional work at affordable prices. We do this by scouring the globe for artists and programmers who have a proven track record and who work at reasonable rates.”

Why did you start it?

William Weaver: “I had a small group of artists from a previous venture. We noticed that there were many service companies which, in an attempt to offer the very lowest prices, were sacrificing quality. We believed we could find a balance of quality and affordability. By using very high end talent, mostly individuals in other nations, we are able to offer affordable rates while still maintaining the highest level of quality on the projects we complete.”

How was your first year in business?

William Weaver: “During our initial six months Hive Media grew slowly as we learned what our clients needed. We began to grow our brand, our samples and our client list, all of which can be reviewed on our website, HiveMedia.org. We have refined our service list and business model to what it is today.  We did well our first year, despite going into business during what could arguably be called the peak of the bad economy. We have no debt and very little overhead. Our business model simply allows us to grow.”

What are your most memorable projects?

“Most of our projects are under non-disclosure agreements, which we take very seriously. One project we can mention was a video game for the xBox360. The company and financier came to Hive Media with a history, lore, and set of rules for their video game and had us create several game characters as well as the 3D world the consumer would play in. It was very exciting to see the project develop from ideas to concept art, then to complex illustrations, and eventually to a living 3D world with 3D characters.”

What is the project you are most proud of?

William Weaver: “We have developed several large projects. One which I remember fondly was creating designs for the Hard Rock Cafe’s American and Japanese line of very important signature shirts. While I cannot go into detail, our clients were very particular about creating designs that attracted a mass audience of consumers. We enjoyed being able to work closely with our client to create designs that would maximize revenue by appealing to a large demographic while still maintaining our clients unique brand.”

What are your goals over the next few years?

William Weaver: “Despite our success we still have a lot of room to grow. We wish to grow our client base, brand reach and business network. We also wish to expand our pool of talent to additional nations and open offices in those locations. The future looks promising and given time I believe our success will only grow due to our firm commitment to quality.”

Hive Media attended the Game Developers Conference 2010 (GDC) and a great time was had. While wading through the nearly 20,000 GDC attendees, Hive Media was able to meet with a few of our existing clients and new clients which wish to use Hive Media’s amazing media services.

xaitment

One of our partners, xaitment had a most excellent booth displaying their technologies. Xaitment is known for having the leading Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions in the video game industry. xaitment is one of Hive Media’s partners on the charity driven public game development project, The Zombie Game Experiment.

To further describe their solutions, xaitment’s website states, “xaitment engineers AI game tools that go far beyond pathfinding. Using xaitment’s modular and intuitive tools, game designers and programmers can easily give NPCs the brainpower to challenge even the most seasoned gamer.”.

Trinigy 8 Another exciting display was the Trinigy booth, were they were displaying their new, intense gaming engine, Trinigy 8. Hive Media may be becoming more familiar with this powerful game development package in the future. We will have more on that another that another time.

Trinigy’s website states, “Trinigy develops and sells the Vision Game Engine. Now in its eighth version, the mature game engine is carefully engineered to empower game developers with unrestrictive workflows, numerous middleware integrations, and the technical and creative freedom to transform imaginative ideas into immersive gameplay.

Used on 125+ projects, Trinigy’s game engine is the trusted solution of PC, console, serious, and casual game developers across the globe…”.

While we were very busy with our various meetings, we still had time to crawl the other booths at GDC and took a handful of pictures in the process!

Here we visited the Autodesk booth, developers of 3dModeling tool Maya, 3DsMAX and other packages.

Fmod also attending GDC, this is an audio solution for game development.

Intel was attending as well. They were also giving out their high end CPUs to lucky winners!

Nintendo was their displaying their games and hardware platforms. Their staff were most helpful, helping Hive Media consider future options for our partners.

Unity had a large booth, educating developers and displaying their package.

Crytek had a great booth, displaying their game engine and amazing statue of one of their game models.

Steve Wiebe, world champion of Donkey Kong, was displaying his skills.

Steve even took time to play our awesome game, Angela’s World and stated that it was a lot of fun to play. Thanks Steve!

One of the more interesting booths at GDC 2010 was the Zombrex booth. They were role-playing a medical team. They would sit you down in a chair and do a small examination to see if you were infected with the zombie virus. They would then give you a for-fun anti-zombie vaccine “injection”.

We also took a bit of time to relax at the International Game Developers Association (IGDA) party.

The entire conference was exhausting, thrilling, educational, profitable and very fun. Hive Media will be sure to return to one of the best game conferences on the globe, next year!
